PEBBLE MILL interviews TERI HATCHER Friday, February 16, 1996 (c) 1996, BBC - Pebble Mill Transcribed February 20/22 by Boris Ammerlaan ************************************************************** Sarah Greene: Hello and welcome. Fans of "The New Adventures Of Superman" will know that at the end of the last series, Clark proposed to Lois Lane. And it appears that she's finally figured out that the mild-mannered reporter is in fact... Superman. So what next? Well, you can find out tomorrow evening at a quarter past six on BBC1, with the start of a brand new series. But in the meantime, Ross talked to Lois Lane herself. Well, actress Teri Hatcher. [Trailer serie III] R: Teri, I've got to do it. Right. Okay, right, this is me. [Puts on a pair of glasses; Teri LOLs] Can you spot the difference? Yes you can! I knew you could. That... T: You're the first guy to ever do that, R: I'll bet you are. Yeah, yeah. That's _so_ original. T: that's... that's... Really, it's _so_ original. R: I presume that has to be the question that's become the bane of your life. How does she not know? T: Well, I have my one answer which was: love is blind, and er... and that just works for me, R: That kills it all. T: and that kills it, and that's the end of it. Because, how can you honestly defend that. I mean, it is a pair of glasses after all. Although I think there's a little more than ...... than the ones you were which really helps the disguise. R: Getting right back to the early days then. What was it like when you got the part? T: Well, I was... doing movies. I wasn't particulary that interested in doing television. And this script came along and I think I -like everybody else- thought "Superman", you know, what's that, how could that possibly be new and different? And er... When I read it, it really was, and it really captured this great woman's character who wasn't so much Lois Lane as she was... you know, this really feisty reporter who... had a lot of emotional levels going on, and I thought, I could see there being, ehm... some place to grow with that character, which I really believe that she has. Ehm... [background scene: III 1, office] But, you know, doing an hour-long drama, and having it be a hit, and having it be this successfull is such a longshot and I don't think anybody... You know, when you sign that five year contract at the beginning, which is... what you sign - that's a standard thing- nobody really thinks you're gonna do that for five years because hardly any of them last that long. But, ehm... that's sort of rewarding. R: Rewarding in-in loads of ways, I would imagine. How has your life changed since then? T: Well, actually, I don't... I don't know that it's really changed. I mean I think... it depends on your priorities, I mean certainly you, you know, you're more famous, I guess and you make more money, and you have less time to yourself. Ehm... But mo... most of those things -I mean the money and the fame- never really've been big driving factors in my life. I mean I live in a very modest house and I drive a modest car and, you know, I just don't have a big desire to have lots of richie things but it has allowed [background photograph: Teri & Jon] my husband and I to do some fine travelling. Ehm... That's sort of where we spend our money. But I don't recognized too much on the street. I mean- R: You're kidding. T: No... especially since I cut my hair [R LOLs] Ehm... That was a... that was a big freedom thing -cutting my hair- 'cause that hair style was becoming very recognized. But... it's not as much of a problem for me as like, say, maybe for Dean, or... 'cause he sort of looks like that on and off camera, exactly the same. R: That good? T: Yeah. [laughs] R: You can hate some people so easily. T: It's pretty easy for him to look that good. [Scene: III 1 Clark throws engagement ring into space] R: What exserts so nice about Superman, it's becoming more and more- I mean, even in the states now the title has changed now, it's... it's "Lois and Clark", isn't it? T: It _always_ was. R: Was it? We didn't have that here. T: I know you didn't. It was a big... thing I had with the Warner Brothers people. R: Really? You wanted that billing, Teri? T: You mean specifically? Well, you know, it wasn't so much that as it is the title "Lois and Clark - the new adventures of Superman" tells the ti... is the title that represents the show, which is: it's a romantic show. It's a relationship oriented show, about these two people, Lois and Clark, and then "The Adventures Of Superman" has always sort of been secondary in terms of saving the day sort of stuff. You know, that's not what drives the show, it's more about the relationship. So to call it the "Superman" show - or the "New Adventures Of Superman"- sort of makes it seem like an action show, which it really isn't, but I think when it first started airing here I think they were nervous that if they called it "Lois and Clark" people would go "'Loose and Clark'? What, that-that expedition coup-" You know, like, you know, they wouldn't know. So I think that's why they did that. R: What I love as well is: you've got in amongst the action as well, haven't you? T: Yes, I got that karate thing going, and er... I end up doing a lot of the... the real grunt stunts, which are... R: "Grunt stunts"? T: Yeah, which are the drowning in cement, you know, which we shoot at two o' clock in the morning, when it's freezing cold, and I'm up to here in mud or whatever and er, you know, falling in the giant cake... cake frosting all over my body from head to toe. And that stuff dries. It is _not_ a great time. [R LOLs] Ehm... so... so those are the grunt stunts. I do a lot of that. [Scene: III 1, metronome, bomb] R: How long can you keep going with this life, because you've gotten into the role so well, and you've made it very much your own. T: Ehm... Well, it always depends on the writing. You know, er... ehm... and and and that has to continue be original, and, you know, move forward. I mean, I think there's obvious places to go. They could get married, you know. They could... You know, I think there's definitely years of development in that. Ehm... R: Too superbabies? T: Yeah, right. Floating up out of the crib. No, I don't know if that's gonna happen, but that certainly could be a direction, I guess. R: [backgound photograph: Dean & Teri] And there's a great on- screen chemistry between you and Dean as well. Are you good pals? T: Not... really but not _not_ good friends. R: Yeah. T: I mean, er... it's an interesting relationship, you know. On the set, we're very supportive. Of each other, and also of the crew, and sort of, we both feel that-that it's really important to have this sort of team -you know, happy- effort that keeps the whole crew and everybody very "up" and positive. Ehm... but... Dean's pretty private and I think... you know, for him that personal and work, really draws that line and, so we don't really hang out or anything. [LOLs] Not like you would necesarily wanna go home with the person you spend fifteen hours a day with and go have, like, tequila or something, or whatever you know. I mean we enjoy dinner, and so- R: I'd make an exception in your case. T: Ah, yeah. R: I'll have to be honest there. T: I'll tell him you said so. R: _But_ on-screen, you left us with a real cliffhanger the last of the... of the last series. There it was, Clark has proposed. T: Right. R: Now I know it's a dumb question, because I know you're not _really_ gonna tell me what happens, but... give us a... give us a clue. T: It's a really great episode. I-I mean it gets... It's-it's a sexy episode, it's a fun episode, it's a... erm... and it's the beginning of what I think is... is the best season that we've had. That's all I can say without giving it away. R: You've sold it- T: And that- R: You've sold it to me. T: Okay. [LOLs] R: Think so. [Scene: III 1 "You're not alone anymore."] What was going on under that cloak, eh? You see, you can get away with murder with a big red cape on, can't you? And the man with read pants worn over his thights is the inspiration for today's showbizz quiz. [Followed by pictures of a good sound system. The question is something like "What planet does Superman come from?".] **************************************************************
