Newsserver

Stack operates its own newsserver, news.stack.nl which carries the standard national and international groups. However it does not carry any binary newsgroups (used for exchanging movies or software). Stack maintains newsfeeds with a dozen of other servers to ensure good updates and prevent a single point of failure.

Stack also offers its own, Stack-specific newsgroups which are not available on any other server. These discussion groups offer a good platform for informal interaction between members. The stack.announce group is used for general announcements - and the other stack.* groups are pretty self-explanatory. The most popular group used to be stack.flame where people vent their frustrations on Stackers, operating systems and certain Unix editors.

Many modern browsers have built-in news (NNTP) support; however lots of specific newsreader software is available as well. A newsreader should preferably support a threaded overview of the discussions and the option to block certain posts or authors. It can be really annoying to try and follow newsgroup discussions without these features.

The newsserver is freely accessible from computers at Stack and the entire university campus network plus TU/e VPN. Stack members can also access the server from other networks using a secure (SSL) connection and giving their standard Stack username and password to log on. Note that many newsreader programs require you to set an option that forces the software to always send authentication credentials. If you don't do this, you'll probably only see the limited list of groups that is available to non-authenticated users. The portnumber used for secure NNTP connections (NNTPS) is 563.
