Lobster
From StackWiki
Lobster is a virtual server running Solaris 10, which will soon be available to Stack members. It is currently still in development and accounts are not created automatically right now, however, you can request the creation of an account by sending a mail to the Stack System Administration at unix@stack.nl .
Lobster is considered a virtual server since it is implemented as a Solaris zone on physical server helsinki.stack.nl. Helsinki runs the system kernel, but all lobster programs run in a confined area. The concept of zones is similar to jails as seen in e.g. BSD and Linux systems.
Software
Software on lobster is installed on a by-demand basis. In other words, if you would like to use a particular software product and cannot find it, please ask the system administrators to install it.
Application software on lobster can be divided into two broad categories: generic programs and large suites. Generic programs refers to software such as editors, shells, database clients, scripting languages and so on. It should be noted that you may need to adjust your PATH variable to find the software, for the locations may differ significantly from the locations used on the other (BSD-based) Stack systems. In particular, you may look at the following paths:
- /usr/sfw contains Solaris-bundled freeware
- /opt/sfw contains non-Solaris-bundled freeware (e.g. from sunfreeware.com)
- /opt/csw contains custom software from the BlastWave project
Below is a list of specially installed software:
- Scientific software, such as MatLab, Mathematica and Maple, can be found in /usr/tuelocal
- The Sun Studio 12 compiler and development suite can be found in /usr/silocal/SUNWspro
- A SPARC-optimized version of GCC (GCCFSS, "GCC for SPARC systems") can be found in /usr/silocal/gccfss
